ETIAS 2026 Update: What UAE Residents Need to Know

By Spread Wings Tourism LLC · October 28, 2026

Planning a trip to Europe? You may have heard about ETIAS, the European Union's upcoming travel authorisation system.

With new European border procedures already in place, many travellers are wondering whether ETIAS is now required before visiting Europe.

Here's what UAE residents need to know.

Is ETIAS Already Required in 2026?

Latest Update: As of October 28, 2026, ETIAS is not yet operational, and applications are not being accepted.

The European Union has planned the launch for the final quarter of 2026, but an exact start date has not been confirmed. Travellers do not need to apply at this time.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is an electronic travel authorisation designed for eligible visa-exempt travellers visiting participating European countries.

Once introduced, ETIAS will be required for eligible short-stay travellers visiting the 30 European countries covered by the system.

ETIAS is not a visa and does not replace a Schengen visa.

Will UAE Residents Need ETIAS?

Your passport nationality, rather than your UAE residency alone, determines whether you need ETIAS or a Schengen visa.

  • UAE passport holders: Generally expected to require ETIAS for eligible visa-free short visits once the system launches.
  • Filipino passport holders: Generally require a Schengen visa for short tourist visits.
  • Indian passport holders: Generally require a Schengen visa for short tourist visits.
  • British and American passport holders: Generally expected to require ETIAS for eligible short visits once operational.

Individual exemptions may apply. Always check the latest requirements before travelling.

How Much Will ETIAS Cost?

The standard ETIAS application fee will be €20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are generally exempt from the fee.

Once approved, ETIAS will generally remain valid for three years or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first.

Eligible travellers may stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, subject to entry conditions.

ETIAS vs. EES: What's the Difference?

Europe's Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on April 10, 2026.

ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt visitors.

EES is an electronic border system that records applicable travellers' entries, exits, and biometric information.

Beware of Unofficial ETIAS Websites

Since ETIAS applications are not yet open, be cautious of websites claiming they can already process or approve ETIAS authorisations.
