Schengen Travel Update 2026: What UAE Residents Should Know About Europe's New Entry/Exit System
Published: October 13, 2026
Planning a trip to Europe? Whether you're visiting France, Italy, Spain, Germany or Switzerland, there's an important change you should know about before travelling.
Europe has introduced a new digital border system called the Entry/Exit System (EES), which became fully operational on April 10, 2026.
If you're a UAE resident planning to travel to the Schengen Area, here's what you need to know.
What Is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?
The Entry/Exit System is a digital system that records when eligible non-EU travellers enter and leave participating European countries for short stays.
Instead of relying on traditional passport stamps, border authorities now record entry and exit information electronically.
The system also collects biometric information, including facial images and fingerprints.
Does This Affect UAE Residents?
Yes, many UAE residents travelling on non-EU passports will be affected, including Filipino, Indian, Pakistani and other eligible non-EU passport holders.
However, the requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status, not simply on whether you live in the UAE.
The EES applies to eligible short-stay travellers, including those travelling with Schengen short-stay visas and those who qualify for visa-free short visits.
Certain travellers, such as holders of qualifying European residence permits or long-stay visas, are exempt.
What Happens When You Arrive in Europe?
When entering a participating European country for the first time under the new system, eligible travellers may need to complete biometric registration at border control.
This generally includes:
- Passport information
- Facial image
- Fingerprints
- Electronic recording of entry and exit dates
On subsequent trips, border authorities can verify the information already recorded in the system.
Does the New System Replace the Schengen Visa?
No. The Entry/Exit System does not replace the Schengen visa.
If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you must still obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.
The EES changes how travellers are registered at the border. It does not change the existing visa requirements or guarantee entry into Europe.
Why Is This Important for Travellers?
The system helps European border authorities monitor authorised stays and identify travellers who exceed their permitted time in the Schengen Area.
For most short-stay visitors, the general rule remains a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period, subject to the validity and conditions of their visa or visa-free permission.
Travellers should always check their permitted length of stay before booking their return flights.
